This is my 31st year in education and have had the pleasure of being the Director for the past 4 years.  Ms. Kay Zahn, Home School Liaison.  This is my first year with Anchor Academy, and I have the privilege of providing individual counseling to students on an as-needed basis, including crisis counseling.   I also coordinate and/or facilitate small groups based on needs assessment, including grief support, divorce support, smoking cessation, and self-esteem.  In addition to counseling duties, I provide community and agency referrals for Anchor students and their families.  Additionally, I teach a weekly elective class to all Anchor students entitled Personal, Career & School Development Skills.  I have my master's degree in social work (MSW) from USF, and a BA in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences also from USF.  I have been with Sarasota County Schools for eight years now, previously as a district-level safe school liaison and as an elementary and middle school counselor.  When I'm not at work, I enjoy being in the great outdoors kayaking, hiking, backpacking, and camping.  I recently joined the Sierra Club and hope to become more involved in helping to protect the environment.  My daughter recently turned 21 and is a junior at UF, majoring in microbiology.

Mr. Judd McKean
is Anchor's English teacher.  I began teaching in 1979 at a great alternative high school called New Directions here in Sarasota County.  Like the Anchor Academy, New Directions focused on teaching individual students one on one.  It, also like Anchor, was enormously successful but the Superintendent at the time deemed it too expensive and eliminated the program.

I left New directions in 1994 to fish commercially for ten years but got tired of killing fish and was lucky enough to be hired into the Anchor Program three years ago.  The good work we do with kids is really satisfying and I would not want to teach anywhere but here.

Mr. Edward Sera, Social Studies Teacher Anchor Academy.I have been teaching social studies since 1997, starting at the middle school level for six years and then at Sarasota high for the last three years.
