A shining star in the North Port sky is surely the Performing Arts Center. This is a beautiful auditorium within the High School grounds that brings together the community to share in cultural events. Throughout the year, and especially during the season of stars, people from around southwest Florida come to enjoy an evening filled with concerts, plays and performances. These range from professional to student groups.
Another organization that brings people from the school and community together is the VFW. The ROTC group at NPHS has fundraising and service related activities at the VFW. Another civic organization that has a positive impact on the community is People for Trees. Often they will collaborate with community businesses to promote sustainable development and advocate for the natural beauty of the area.
The first time I visited North Port a real estate agent made sure to point out “Church Drive”. The actual name of the street is Biscayne but literally for the first mile driving north from US-41 the avenue is lined with religious establishments. Nearby Biscayne and US-41 is South Biscayne Baptist church. On the south side of US-41 and Biscayne there is St. Pedro Catholic Church. These two organizations, as well as the other spiritual groups in North Port, give back to the community. Recently Biscayne Baptist Church held an evening with the Power Team and invited the public to come to this inspirational and engaging presentation. There are many services these groups help within the community such as: adult and youth education, health care and fundraising.
North Port has relied on the hospitals of neighboring communities for its health needs. Fawcett Memorial Hospital and Englewood Hospital are the two closest medical facilities. There are plans to bring a hospital to North Port, but currently there are only private medical offices and a small medical group located at Sumter and US-41.
