Learning at Lamarque Media Center 

     Lamarque students have Media Center once every nine days on the specials wheel. During this 55-minute class, students have a lesson that teaches literacy and library skills with the aim of fostering a love of reading! Instruction is based on national information literacy standards. These lessons can include a read-a-loud, reader's theater, hands-on Activboard activity, online card catalog training/research, or a collaborative group activity.
     Following the lesson, students browse the media center for books and may check-out books of interest. Sunshine State Standards: 
            LA.A.2.1.2 selects material to read for pleasure
            LA.A.2.2.4 identifies specific personal preferences relative to fiction and nonfiction reading.

Annie and the Wild Animals
Lesson Information

Specific Objectives:

l by viewing the cover of Annie and the Wild Animals, students will make predictions about setting and plot

l teacher will convey background information about Scandinavia (geography and climate), which is the setting of the story. Students will contrast Scandinavia with Florida.

l after read-aloud of the book, students will demonstrate recall of story details by naming the animals in the story and moving graphic representations of them into a story box on the flipchart. Students will also list specifics about native winter dress described in the story on the Activboard.

l students will brain-storm ideas of how the story woud be different if setting was moved from Scandinavia to their own town in Florida -- including which different animals would be involved, attire, and

l students will individually write their own adaptation of the story set in Florida based on their own experiences 

General Objectives by Florida Sunshine State Standards:

LA.A.1.1.1 predicts what a passage is about based on its title and illustrations.
LA.C.1.1.4 retells specific details of information heard, including sequence of events.
LA.E.1.1.2 identifies the story elements of setting, plot, character, problem and solution/resolution.
LA.C.1.1.1 listens for a variety of informational purposes, including curiosity, pleasure, getting direction, performing tasks, solving problems, and following rules.

LA.E.2.1.1 uses personal perspective in responding to a work of literature, such as relating characters and simple events in a story or biography to people or events in his or her own life.

Library Lessons March 19 - Apr 5:

  • Simple Map Skills (Grades 1 and 2) - we explore the concept of what makes a book series unique, discuss different types of book characters (people, animals, and things), and read aloud from one of the Harry the Dog books, Harry The Dirty Dog. Students are given a hand-out showing a map of Harry's neighborhood and, as they listen to the story, they trace the path that Harry took as he ran away from home.
  • How to use a Newspaper Index (Grade 4), a lesson using the North Port edition of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  • Synonyms & Antonyms (Grades 3 and 5) - students creatively use antonyms and synonyms as clues to guide a fellow student to guess the secret word in a "Password"-style game.
  • Rhymes (Kindergarten) - to celebrate Spring, students hear the story of A Boy and His Bunny, exploring the concepts of rhyming words and acting out the story.

Library Lessons January 30 - Feb 9:

Grades K through 5 prepared for our upcoming Seuss-A-Thon by sending a Birthday card to the Cat in the Hat, who turns 50 this year. At Seussville.com students sent the card and helped others at the same time. For every birthday card sent, Random House will donate one book to a deserving child. Students who sent cards were given a certificate of appreciation

Library Lessons January 3 - 16:

  • Reading of Caps for Sale across all grades. Students participate in this delightful tale of a peddler, some monkeys, and their monkey business. Students take on the role of the monkeys interacting with the peddler. This classic children's story by Russian emigre Esphyr Slobodkina continues to enchant and stimulate the imagination of contemporary children.
  • Vocabulary: peddler, wares
  • Skills practiced:
    • Grades K-5: remembering narrative details and sequence of events (LA.C.1.1.4 retells specific details of information heard, including sequence of events)
    • Grades 3-5: summarizing skills, written assessment (LA.A.1.2.4 clarifies understanding by rereading, self-correction, summarizing, checking other sources, and class or group discussion)

Library Lessons for December 4 - 14, 2006:

  • Reading time for K-2: The Polar Express (alternate reading available: Circus Caps for Sale).
    Skills practiced:
    • Compare/contrast: students discussed the similarities and differences between the book and the film of The Polor Express (students were shown the film in Music class during this rotation). Also discussed the choices made in developing a short story into a full-length film.
    • Art connection: students colored and created stick puppets of the characters in the story
    • Sunshine State Standards: LA.C.1.1.1 listens for a variety of informational purposes, including curiosity, pleasure, getting direction, performing tasks, solving problems, and following rules.
  • Reader's Theater for Grades 3 through 5, "The Spirit of the Season" by Susan Kilpatrick. This secular story discusses the general holidays of the season and the meaning people find in them. Students choose parts to read from the Activboard, followed by a poem based on The Polar Express. Skills practiced:
    • vocabulary: wreath, ornament, Kwanzaa, menorah
    • LA.C.1.2.1 listens and responds to a variety of oral presentations...
    • FL.B.1.2.1 recognizes various activities and celebrations in which children participate in the target culture ...
  • Kindergarten - graduation to self-selection of books. Prior to this, Kindergartners chose from pre-selected books. Now, they have learned to use a Shelf Marker, learned the Shelf Marker song, and now may make their own selections of books in the Everybody Section.
    Skills practiced:
    • LA.A.2.1.2 selects material to read for pleasure

November 16 - December 4, 2007

  • Grade K - 1 read-a-loud: Officer Buckle and Gloria.
    Skills practiced: personal relevance and compare/contrast. Students discussed what it is like to have a best buddy, and how their relationships with a best buddy was like or unlike the relationship between Officer Buckle and Gloria.
  • Grades 2 - 5:
    • introduction of organization of non-fiction books in the library and how they are designated by call number.
    • Review of last two sessions usage of online card catalog and searching by Title for Call Numbers of Fiction and Everybody Books. Extended this to Non-Fiction books.
    • Individual Assessment: students drew a title out of a hat, which they had to take to the computer, find the call number, then find the book on the shelf and bring it to the Media Specialist. Successful students then went on check out books
    • Skills practiced: LA.B.2.2.2 - organizes information using alphabetical and numerical sytem.

November 3 - 15, 2007:

  • Grade 1 Read-a-loud Thank You, Sarah! The Woman Who Saved Thanksgiving. The true story of Sarah Hale, a woman on a mission. Acclaimed children's author Laurie Halse Anderson takes students on a journey of a woman and a pen that spanned four decades, the Civil War, and five presidents, all so you could have your turkey and eat it too
    • Sunshine State Standards SS.A.3.1.3 understands the cultural traditions and contributions of various societies since the Renaissance (e.g., the role of folktales and literature in transmitting cultural beliefs and the holidays and ceremonies of different cultures).!
  • Reading for Kindergartners: Sheep in a Jeep, a study of rhymes.
    • Sunshine State Standards LA.E.2.1.2 recognizes rhymes, rhythm, and patterned structures in children’s texts.
  • Grade 1: Follow-up activity from last session. Students again must find and checkout a book by an author whose last name starts with the same letter as theirs.
  • Grades 2-5: Follow-up activity from last week.
    • Review reading a spine label for Fiction and Everybody books using the Activboard.
    • Introduction to using the online Card Catalog to look up Call Numbers based on Title -- this is reinforcing ultimate goal, to allow students to search for their own books and find them in the Media Center without adult assistance.
    • Assessment in collaborative groups consisted of taking a list of titles to the card catalog and finding the Call Numbers (five questions for 2nd graders, ten questions for 3-5th grades; fifth graders also had Biography titles)
    • Skills practiced: LA.B.2.2.2 - organizes information using alphabetical and numerical sytem.

October 23 - November 2, 2007

  • Grade K
    • Owen book coverread-a-loud of Owen by Kevin Henkes. I only read to before the resolution of the conflict -- students practiced their predicting skills to guess the ending. During check-out the video of Owen was played and students could hear the actual ending and compare it to their predictions.
    • Review of library etiquette.
  • Grade 1:
    • review of library etiquette using Skoob, the Shelf Elf's Sad/Glad game.
    • review alphabetical order using Activboard, then followed by collaborative group activity of each table taking a magnetic alphabet set and putting letters in alphabetical order.
    • library skills: students introduced to concept of books arranged alphabetically by author's last name
    • assignment: each student must locate the section of Everybody Books where books can be found by authors whose last name starts with the same letter as the student's last name. Student must check out one book from that section, as well as a free choice from elsewhere in the Everybody section
    • Skills practiced: LA.B.2.2.2 - organizes information using alphabetical and numerical sytem.
  • Grades 2-5: library skills lesson using the Activboard on how to read a call number on the spine label for Fiction and Everybody books (5th graders also studied Biography spine labels). Followed by small group evaluation, table groups were shown book covers on the Activboard and had to create the spine label (five questions for grade 2, ten questions for higher grades)
    • Skills practiced: LA.B.2.2.2 - organizes information using alphabetical and numerical sytem.

Library Lessons for October 9 - 20:

  • Book Fair attendance for all grades
  • Reading time for K-2 featured the story Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. This delightful story tells of Chrysanthemum, a baby mouse who loves her name, until she starts school and other children make fun of it.
    • Skills practiced:
      • Prediction. Students got to work on their predicting skills by guessing how the story would end.
      • Finding personal connections: students discussed when they were made fun of or saw someone else made fun of. (LA.E.2.1.1 uses personal perspective in responding to a work of literature...)
    • Review of the Shelf Marker song,

Library Lessons in September through October 6:

    • Introduction to the Media Center and basic Library etiquette
