Welcome to an exciting 2008-2009 school year with the new Booker Middle School multiage Academy of Applied Career Technology (ACT)!  The purpose of our career preparatory program is to offer select 7th and 8th grade students the opportunity to learn valuable technological skills with real-world connections to math, science, language arts, and social studies.

I am delighted to be your child’s Language Arts and Social Studies teacher this year. In these classes, we will be utilizing both textbooks and online curriculum resources. Every student will have access to a computer every day, in every class. In Language Arts, we will be focusing on integrating technology to reinforce reading comprehension, vocabulary and grammar skills, and writing strategies involving a variety of topics covering all the significant literary genres. In Social Studies, the primary focus will be US History, with additional coursework in global studies and 21st century careers. These will be multi-media, hands-on classes where creativity and collaboration with peers will be highly encouraged. In turn, I encourage you to be involved in your child’s success by discussing with him/her what was learned in class, assignments and projects, and issues that may arise.

I hope to see your child every school day, prepared to learn and contribute to class in order to get the most out of class and achieve the greatest amount of success. If for some reason, a student misses class, they will be given a 3-day grace period to make up their assignments and/or tests. Please carefully read the student handbook, especially the sections about attendance, dress code, and behavior.

Open parent-teacher communication is welcome at all times. Please call or email me with any questions or concerns at 359-5824 or MaryPat_Everist@srqit.sarasota.k12.fl.us.

Grading will be according to the following chart:                                http://stuccohouse.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html
Class assignments 20%
Participation (responses, discussions) 15%
Quizzes (concepts, vocabulary) 10%
Projects (book reports, thematic) 30%
Tests (reading comprehension, writing) 25%

Please read and sign the Twister Team ACT Student and Parent Contracts  that your child is bringing home, as well as the stapled set of forms that accompany the take-home packet.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT and looking forward to meeting you all!
